11/27/2000“SUICIDE NOTES”: VOLUME ONE.
An Interview by Robert Eugene Roman II.“..from the back of my eyes…”
PETER MURPHY sings…JUST FOR LOVEWhen I dreamed up this column only a week or so ago, I assigned myself this daunting task: find something truly fascinating happening in the rock music world today. What could be tougher? As I tread water in a veritable sea of pop-mediocrity, it suddenly dawned on me that I had already subconsciously chosen a topic about six weeks prior. In my never-ending quest for that rare band, entertainer or event that engages me on a myriad of artistic levels – musically, lyrically, and intellectually – it occurred to me that I had purchased tickets to a show by just such an artist: an artist whose stock-in-trade is arguably the absolute nexus in pop music of what I dig.
That artist is PETER MURPHY, and the event is his current quasi-acoustic show, the JUST FOR LOVE tour.
It’s true. The enigmatic pioneer of modern-day alternative music and ultra-charismatic singer for the groundbreaking dark/art band BAUHAUS has “stripped-down” to the bare minimum his recent solo-project WILD BIRDS tour and taken it on the road once again, redefining his music rather than reinventing himself. Accompanied by violin virtuoso Hugh Marsh and guitarist extraordinaire Peter DiStefano, Murphy decided that a “tip of the hat” was in order for the thousands of loyal fans who showed so much enthusiasm and appreciation for the acoustic encores during his shows earlier this year.
I spoke with an upbeat and remarkably revealing PETER MURPHY as he prepared for the San Francisco leg of the tour:
