POP UP RADIO: JURASSIC
5 INTERVIEW (CONTINUED)
Chali 2na - Well they
are two different labels and they came together for the release.
PUR - Oh! OK
well the next record you guys put out was called Jayou and that was on
what sounds like another Indie label called Can Records?
Cut Chemist - That
was for overseas licensing.
Chali 2na - Yea for
the EP.
PUR - Yea, so I think
it’s very cool that you guys have all sold so many records on your own
(200,000 units of the EP) and that’s before Interscope stepped in. How did you manage to pull off
so many CD sales on your own without the major label push?
Chali 2na - Man just
doin' a lot of shows and stuff. Word of mouth. Yea just word
of mouth man you know stuff just puttin' stuff out ourselves doin' a lot
of shows constantly stayin' in the public eye stayin' cause we didn’t have
no like major push before Interscope you know what I’m saying? As far as videos
and things like that.
PUR - I’ve interviewed
a lot of bands and very few have that much I guess street smarts
to be able to get out and push records on their own. A lot of them
are waiting for a label to come along and do everything.
Akil - We didn’t.
Enough of that. We hadn’t done enough for that there.
PUR - Yea so, along
those lines what do you think about your association with say Interscope
and are they a help or a hindrance at this point? What do you think
about that?
J5 - It’s been a help.
Akila - They helping.
Chali 2na - It’s like
a marriage thing. You know what I’m saying? In that you go to them
with your problems.
PUR - So it’s been
a help. I know it must be difficult to be on a label with so much talent
on it. Do you feel lost in the crowd at all?
Chali 2na - Naw.
We had our own thing. You know before that they came to us
asking us what we are going to do within our genre of music so it’s
like you know it’s not really lost it’s more like a help in the back like
you know eh this is happening over here we need such and such... you know
this kind of stuff.
Chali 2na - Zaakir (aka Soup) just walked in.
PUR -
So you guys don’t sing about the gangsta life which seems to be the happening
thang right now. What are your lyrics about and what are you going
to be writing about in the future?
