this year in Austin, Texas featured 1000 bands from all around the world.
Seeing Interscope's Hip-hop fav's Jurassic 5 was at the top of my list.
Their 2k version of old-school rap has been both praised and questioned
by fans and journalists of late. I wanted to find out why, and get
the straight scoop from this talented LA sextet themselves.
PUR - So, we're sitting
here with two of the members of Jurassic 5, Akil and Chali 2na, an
LA Hip-hop band that's completely successful on their own and now has their
own record deal with Interscope a very highly acclaimed record that’s out
called
'Quality Control' which was released in the Fall of two thousand.
Chali 2na - Yea, actually
the summer 2000.
PUR- Summer 2000?
Chali 2na - Yea.
Cut Chemist just walked in.
PUR - So any way,
you're part of the new rap underground and what’s being said I guess is
that a variety of the music analysts are lookin at you like your
music is part of the old school rap resurgence. You were originally
part of two different crews is that right?
C2na - Yea - Unity
Committee which was Me, Cut Chemist, Mark 7even; and The Rebels Of
Rhythm which was Akil & Zaakir.
PUR - I see, and you
(Chali 2na) are also part of Ozamatli?
Chali 2na - Yea, at
the time I was.
PUR - Oh and now that’s
not happening? Because they’re also part of this show tonight.
Aren’t they?
Chali 2na - Yea. I
mean we all indirectly, you know what I am saying, we're all connected like
a big family.
PUR - Ok and so you’ve
had as I said earlier you’ve had several very successful releases.
First was a record out on TVT which was titled Unified Rebellion and
then came the Jurassic 5 EP out on Rumble Pickinini. Is that
a self spun label?
Chali 2na - Yea
Cut Chemist - Yea
it’s still in effect.
PUR - It is still
in effect?
Cut Chemist - Yea
I just found out from them.
PUR - Right on. So
what are the plans for that label? To continue to release the EP?
Cut Chemist - Actually
the owner of Pickinini is the half owner of Rumble.
PUR - What does that
mean? Rumble Pickinini.
