Drowning
Pool Hits The Bigtime!
-Sinner, their debut album
produced by Jay Baumgardner, goes platinum and scores another homerun for Wind-Up Records
POP UP RADIO: AN INTERVIEW
WITH DROWNING POOL DRUMMER MIKE LUCE
SEPTEMBER 17, 2001
BY DEY MARTIN
If Drowning Pool was a baseball
team they would be batting '1000'. They are from the south.
They are tenacious (just ask the guys from Sevendust). They play
a full-throttle pedal to the metal blend of hardcore-metal with hints of
Korn and some say even Tool.
The 2001 Ozzfest promoters thought they were
bad-ass and bumped them up from the baby stage to the main stage supporting
Mudvayne. Their debut record titled 'Sinner'
out on Wind-Up Records just went Platinum. The "Bodies" video is
all over MTV.
Yikes! Do these guys have the best luck in the world?
Or, has their obvious talent as performers, and downright superb musicianship landed them a coveted spot as the next great white hope of hardcore
metal?
I spoke with D.P. drummer Mike Luce on tour
with Sevendust about their good fortune, the shitty VMA's and what's in
store for their fans next.
*****
So Mike, where are you guys at right now?
We are in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
You got a show tonight?
Yeah we got a show tonight with Sevendust
brothers, and Craving Theo.
Right on. Good luck with that.
Thank you sir.
So you are originally from that part of the
world anyway. You’re from Louisiana right?
Yeah , C.J. and I are both from New Orleans,
Louisiana, and the other two guys are of course from Dallas and then we
all hooked up there in Dallas probably..... in ‘97 I think.
Have you guys been touring like maniacs since
then?
Uh, we did a lot of stuff before we got signed,
you know locally and we stretched out to some surrounding states. Now we
have been on the road since April now with the release of the album.
Right on. Ill bet you guys are really bummed
that you didn’t win the VMA’s, eh?
I don’t know if we were actually.....
No I’m just kidding.
Oh okay.(Laughing)
Yeah I was kinda bummed out about the MTV
show, it was kinda popped out. A real TRL suck-up.
Yeah, definitely, the only good bands
there were like Staind and... Was Ozzy on there?
No Ozzy wasn’t on there, but Staind was up
for like best rock video along with Weezer and well there was a couple
other people. Well it was disappointing to say the least.
